Pint & Politics: Rise of the robots! (AI regulation)

  • 16 Jun 2026
  • 7.30 pm - 10.00 pm
  • 16 Saint Peter's Street
    St Albans
    AL1 3LH

Join us for this month's Pint & Politics as we tackle one of the most defining political debates of our generation: the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence and how we regulate it.

As Liberal Democrats, we champion innovation and the immense benefits AI can bring to science, climate technology, and public services. However, our core values demand that we look critically at the profound risks it poses to our fundamental values. From the alarming use of autonomous AI weapons in global warfare to the erosion of personal privacy, algorithmic bias, and the threat to individual freedom, the need for robust ethical boundaries has never been more urgent.

How do we protect civil liberties and global peace without crushing progress? Grab a drink, bring your thoughts, and let’s debate how a liberal society should govern the machines.

There will be plenty of parking along The Street - which runs from The Grange all the way up to the War Memorial. Parking will also available around the village square and at Neville Hall, which is opposite The Bell pub.

The party will start at 4pm, with drinks and a BBQ dinner (including vegan options) at about 6pm.  This is intended to be a family occasion, so please feel free to bring your children of all ages. Swimming in the outdoor pond, tennis on the court and croquet on the lawn will all be available. (Please note that the swimming pond is unfenced and parents must please keep their small children closely supervised near to it.  There is also now a wildlife pond at the bottom of the garden – this is fenced, but not entirely secure, so care needs to be taken there too)

We plan to wind up about 9pm – but The Bell next door will be open all evening until 11pm.

This is a great chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones, and hopefully soak up the sunshine and play some summer games.

Mission and misogyny: Religious charities promoting sexism, patriarchy and violence against women

  • 23 Jun 2026
  • 7.30 pm - 8.30 pm

Female subordination. Sexist 'modesty' codes. Violence against women. These are forms of misogyny we would expect charities to try to combat. Yet as the National Secular Society's ground-breaking report "Mission and Misogyny" reveals, too many charities are promoting these ideas – all under the cloak of 'advancing religion'.

Report author Megan Manson will explain how religious fundamentalists are exploiting our charity sector to promote regressive and harmful ideas about women. Her presentation will summarise the report's findings, and include video clips from sermons revealing how religious charities have used the cover of 'the advancement of religion' to promote or condone misogyny.

Megan Manson is head of campaigns at the NSS. She previously worked for the Japanese government promoting cultural exchange and language learning. She has long been active in local interfaith initiatives.
