Saving Live Music & Local Pubs

Pubs are a British institution and the backbone of many communities all over the country.

The Music industry is an £8bn industry which is currently growing faster than the economy at 5% in 2025.

But both industries face significant challenges.

Energy bills, inflation and other factors closed an average of one pub every day in 2025.   This is costing jobs, costing the economy, and damaging communities.

Brexit red tape, lost venues, and AI are just three of the issues making it ever harder to earn a living as a grassroots musician.  And if the grassroots sector collapses, the future of music in the UK will be at risk.

Both industries are in a position to help each other and themselves at the same time.  And as Liberal Democrats we can help both of them.

From Campaigners to councillors and up to MPs  - we can all champion local venues, local pubs and local musicians.

Join our event to find out how.

Speakers include Sarah Olney MP - Business Spokesperson, and Sophie Asquith from the Music Venues Trust.

There will be guest performances from Sarah Olney MP & Cllr Charlie Clinton, as well as other guests.

For concession tickets (Students / unemployed / those on benefits) please contact Charlie at  events@londonlibdems.org.uk

All proceeds will go towards funding campaigning in the Local Elections.

Pint & Politics - February

The price of freedom - would you invest in Britain’s security?

In the grim dark present day, Trump's threats range from simply not defending NATO to actively threatening Denmark and its territory, Greenland. Russia is having a "hot war" on our doorstep while arguably fighting a "hybrid war" against us and our allies.

In light of this, the Lib Dems have now announced a policy for "Defence Bonds", raising up to £20 billion to boost funding for our armed forces and other security services.

Sometimes known as war bonds, this is a traditional way of funding the armed forces and defence initiatives going back to the Napoleonic Wars.

In our session, we will look at the state of our armed forces (grim!) and the legacy of years and years of Conservative rule. We will consider the need for investment to keep us safe from Russia, cyber attacks, and aggressive "allies" like Trump. And we will consider this new policy and ask, would you invest your savings in the 'defence of the nation'? Or do you think that a country where "everything is broken" should have different priorities right now?

LIBG forum on Turkey

  • 09 Feb 2026
  • 6.30 pm - 8.00 pm

A key country between Europe and Asia, Turkey has been ruled by Recep Tayyip Erdogan for more than 20 years.

Domestically, despite the 2022 agreement with the PKK, the situation remains complex with the Kurds and, more generally, with ethnic and religious minorities, and the rule of law is increasingly under threat, as judges and journalists observe on a daily basis.
In its traditional sphere of influence in the Balkans, the Caucasus and the Middle East, Turkey is developing a suspicious imperialism, the latest developments of which in Syria are more than worrying.
Finally, as NATO's second largest army after the United States, Turkey wishes to develop an ambitious diplomatic role on the world stage, which often requires it to overcome numerous contradictions.
On 9 February at 6.30 pm, LIBG will host a webinar on this country, which is essential not only for international security and for the respect of human rights but also for its ability to truly embody a bridge between East and West.

The panellists will be:

Baroness Meral Hussein-Ece, member of the Lords
Bülent Kenes, Turkish journalist, Executive Director of the European Centre for Populism Studies
Sir Graham Watson, Chair of LIBG, professor at Toronto University

The debate will be moderated by Antoine Godbert, member of the LIBG executive, and  professor of geopolitics at ESCP Business School.
