What in the World is Happening? Globalisation, Deglobalisation and Britain's future role

Join us for an unmissable evening with Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles KCMG LVO, one of Britain's most distinguished diplomats and a Sevenoaks local who cut his political teeth supporting the Liberal campaign in 1974—much of it run from his dad's Landrover!

From serving as Ambassador to Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Israel, to engaging with governments worldwide in senior roles at HSBC, Sherard has witnessed first-hand the seismic shifts reshaping our world. As Brexit's consequences unfold, trade patterns fracture, and new alliances form, what role should Britain play on the global stage?

With his unique perspective spanning diplomacy, international business, and decades of Middle Eastern expertise, Sherard will explore:

  • The forces driving deglobalisation
  • How Britain can navigate this changing landscape
  • What our relationship with Europe, Asia and the Middle East should look like

Author of Cables from Kabul and Ever the Diplomat, Sherard combines insider knowledge with engaging storytelling. This is your chance to hear from someone who's shaped Britain's foreign policy and to ask your questions about our nation's future.

Free and open to all. Light refreshments provided. The talk will follow our members-only AGM (7.15 - 8.00pm)

Event Details

The 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Liberal Democrats for Electoral Reform (LDER) will be held on November 3 via Zoom, starting at 7:30pm.

We are over a year into this Parliament and our 72 Liberal Democrat MPs are front and centre in the fight for fair votes.

With the most pro-PR parliament in history, an overwhelmingly pro-PR parliamentary Labour Party and an increasingly fragmented political landscape, could the conditions finally be ripe for change?

Join us for our AGM to find out what LDER has been doing this year; and discuss the prospect for reform in this Parliament.

Once registered, you will receive a confirmation email containing a link to join the meeting.

The relevant papers will all be available on our website by 27th October: https://www.lder.org/agm-2025

All are welcome at our meeting, but only paid-up members of LDER will be eligible to vote in our formal business.

You can join or rejoin LDER here: https://www.lder.org/join-us

We look forward to sharing our work with you and to the next phase of the campaign.

We are delighted that, after AGM formalities, we will also host a panel discussion focused on the prospects for electoral reform in this parliament, featuring:

  • Lisa Smart MP. Lisa is our new Lib Dem spokesperson for the Cabinet Office; and serves as our Vice Chair on the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections.
  • Olly Glover MP. Olly is our new Lib Dem spokesperson for Transport; and an active member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections.
  • Cameron Thomas MP. Cameron is a member of the House of Commons' Environmental Audit Committee; and an active member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections.

After a discussion, the panel will take your questions.

Racism, Islamophobia and Striving for a Fairer Britain

  • 6.30 pm - 7.30 pm

Islamophobia is more than just offensive remarks - it’s a form of bigotry that shows up as hate crimes, media bias, and institutional discrimination. Almost 40% of religious hate crimes in 2024 targeted Muslims and current trends show that there was a 19% increase in religious hate crimes targeted at Muslims, with a spike in these offences seen at the time of the Southport murders and subsequent disorder, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and action.

To mark Islamophobia Awareness Month, the Liberal Democrat London network invite you to this webinar panel discussion exploring current and future efforts to combat racism and Islamophobia in the UK.

In our quest for a fairer and equal Britain where everyone can flourish and engage in public life free from discrimination, this panel will cover the latest insights from anti-racism campaigners, victim support service providers and British Muslim community perspectives in light of recent developments in the current political climate.

Please join the London Liberal Democrats and MCB Webinar to highlight Islamophobia Awareness Month with Hina Bokhari OBE AM, one of the first Muslim women elected to the London Assembly.
