Have a fun time while you help us raise funds by joining our quiz night at the Old Drill Hall at the Chesham Youth Centre, Bellingdon Rd, Chesham HP5 2HA. 

A delicious hot, light supper will be provided as part of your ticket price and there will be a paid bar serving the usual drinks.  We will accept cash and have a card machine.

The Road to Westminster (via Leicester South) 

Join us for dinner and conversation with Chris Coghlan MP.

This will be a fundraising event. A three-course meal will be provided for £35 a head. Money raised will be used to help us fight next year’s city council elections.

Chris Coghlan was one of our 72 Liberal Democrat MPs elected at the 2024 General Election. He represents the Dorking and Horley constituency and serves on the House of Commons Treasury Committee. Chris spent a decade working in finance before pursuing a career in public service. He joined the Foreign Office’s counter-terrorism department, founded the international development charity Grow Movement, and served as an officer in the army reserve. In 2020 Chris was called up by the army and embedded as a military advisor with Iraqi forces fighting ISIS.

Chris was our candidate for Leicester South in the 2019 general election, and on Wednesday 28th October, he'll be revisiting our city to join us for dinner and share insights from Westminster.

Zuffar Haq MBE is Liberal Democrat Councillor for Evington Ward and Parliamentary candidate for Leicester East. He will share insights from his work on Leicester Council and give updates on the campaign plan for the upcoming council elections.

Rather than a formal lecture, the event will feature an interactive fireside chat touching on adult social care—a subject currently at the top of the national political agenda—alongside key insights into support for unpaid carers, workforce challenges, and healthcare reform.

Young Liberals in Harrogate & Knaresborough are joining University of York Lib Dems for an afternoon of bowling (free), followed by food at Nando's (pay for your own food).

Our GUEST SPEAKER will be Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, and currently chair of the cross-party House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee.

A physics teacher by profession, Layla has an international background; her mother is a Christian Arab from Jerusalem, and her father a British EU Ambassador. She has lived in many countries including Belgium, Greece, Ethiopia, Jamaica and Jordan and speaks French fluently along with some Spanish, Arabic and Greek.

At home, she is a proud community activist campaigning to save local businesses, for better schools provision and fairer taxation.  

Known for expressing forthright views with vim, vigour and humour, we much look forward to her lively company.

David Howarth is Professor of Law and Public Policy at Cambridge, Fellow of Clare College, former Liberal Democrat MP and Shadow Justice Secretary, former UK Electoral Commissioner, and erstwhile long time member of the Liberal Democrat Federal Policy Committee.

His new book, Being Liberal is about the instincts of British Liberals – about what those instincts are, and why they still matter. It argues that a Liberal disposition in politics consists of seven traits: openness, hating the abuse of power, being non-judgmental, treating people as individuals not as members of categories or classifications, disliking bombast and hierarchy, trying to be cool and rational, and looking for compromise and moderation. It builds its case not from theories of liberalism but from the lives, writing and experiences of real Liberal people, including Liberal and Liberal Democrat party leaders and prominent supporters, many of whom the author has known and worked with, including all the party leaders of the past 50 years. It acknowledges that Liberals have characteristic weaknesses as well as strengths but argues that anti-liberalism, now fashionable and even intellectually dominant, not only misunderstands Liberals but also poses dangers that only Liberals and Liberalism can counteract.

It will take place upstairs in the Duke of Wellington pub on Thursday 12 November, 7pm arrival for 7.30pm start.

Cllr Ben Proctor holds surgeries every other month so that local residents can talk to him about local issues over a cup of coffee. You do not need a ticket and can just turn up. But please do get a ticket if it will help to remind you when the surgery is being held.

Ealing already hosts data centres, and more are planned. But what are they actually for, and how much energy do they use, and how should we judge a local proposal?

I'm Helen Cross, and because I work with AI, these questions matter deeply to me. I'm chairing an evening to help us look past the headlines and get straight to the evidence. 

Here's what I've planned for us: 

• Analysis & Technology: Chris Lomax (Chair of LibSTEM) will share their detailed analysis of data centres.
  
  
• Environmental Impact: Josh Matthews will look closely at the ecological implications.
  
  
• Q&A & Discussion: Mandy Lurie will moderate questions from the chat. After a short panel presentation, most of the hour is yours for open discussion and questions!
  
  
• Local Action: We'll also share a quick update on what the party is doing locally and how you can get involved.
